High data usage warnings on my son's phone keep appearing

Hi all, hoping someone can explain this in plain English. My son keeps getting high data usage warnings on his Nexora mobile, but he insists he's hardly used it. He's on Wi-Fi at home most of the time and says he's not watching videos or anything. The warnings started last week and now he's nearly burned through his allowance. Is there a way to see what's actually using it, or is the warning just not accurate? Sorry if this is a daft question, I'm not very technical.
  • Not daft at all. First thing I'd check is whether apps are allowed to use data in the background. Phones can chew through loads without you noticing - especially cloud backups, app updates, or social media auto-playing videos. If he's on iPhone, there's a Mobile Data section in Settings that shows usage by app. Android has something similar in Data usage. Might be worth a look before assuming Nexora's warning is wrong.
  • Hi MandyH12, Sam here from Nexora. The high data usage warning is triggered by our network when a line passes certain usage thresholds. It doesn't usually mean there's a fault with the warning itself, but it can sometimes catch people out if a phone is using data in the background, even when the screen is off. A few things to check: - App updates set to mobile data instead of Wi-Fi only - Cloud photo backup or WhatsApp media backup - Video apps set to high quality on mobile data - Hotspot/tethering being used by other devices If you'd like, you can also sign in to the Nexora app and view rough usage by day. It won't always show every app, but it can help identify spikes. If the warnings are appearing unusually early, I can take a look at the line usage with you. I just can't access a minor's account details directly unless the account holder contacts us.
  • We had this with our daughter last month and it turned out to be photo backups over mobile data. She swore blind it wasn't her, but the phone was uploading everything in the background whenever she left the house. Also worth checking if he's using Wi-Fi Assist or something similar - that can switch to mobile data when the Wi-Fi is weak.
  • Thanks everyone. I had a look and there is loads in the usage report, but it doesn't really make sense to me. It says 'system services' and 'social media' mostly. Does that mean the phone itself is the problem? And if I turn mobile data off, will he still get messages on WhatsApp when he's out?
